You're at the optician, one eye covered, reading the chart on the wall. The bottom line, the tiny letters: E, F, P, T, O, Z. You squint and just about get them. Then they ask you to cover the other eye — same chart — and suddenly you rattle off that bottom line like it's nothing. Your eyesight didn't improve in those ten seconds. You just remembered the letters.
Something almost identical happens with tests of your mind. And almost nobody warns you about it.
You take a test of your memory, your focus, your speed. You get a number. A couple of weeks later you take it again, and the number is higher. For a moment it feels good — a small piece of proof that you're sharper, that whatever you've been doing is working. But before you celebrate, it's worth asking an uncomfortable question: did your brain actually get better — or did you just get better at the test?
Because the second time, you've seen the puzzle before. You remember a few of the answers. You recognize the trick the moment it shows up. You're not nervous anymore — you know exactly what's coming. None of that is your mind improving. And all of it pushes your score up anyway.
It has a name, and it's almost everywhere
Psychologists call it the practice effect, and it's one of the most stubborn problems in measuring the mind. When researchers pooled nearly 1,600 results from the standard tests, they found the same pattern almost everywhere: people score higher on the second attempt for no reason other than having done it before.1 It isn't a flaw in a few bad tests. It's nearly all of them.
It even shows up in perfectly healthy people tested again and again — the scores keep drifting upward from sheer familiarity, not from any real gain.2 You haven't changed. The number has.
And here is where it stops being a curiosity and starts to matter to you.
The part that should worry you
The practice effect doesn't just make fake progress look real. It can hide the one thing you'd most want to catch.
Imagine your real ability is slipping, just slightly — and at the same time, your growing familiarity with the test is quietly nudging your score up. The two cancel each other out. The number looks flat. Steady. Fine. And you'd never know that anything was moving underneath.3
So the very tool you were using to keep an eye on yourself becomes the thing that reassures you when it shouldn't. A test that can be memorized doesn't just flatter you on the way up. It can blind you on the way down.
A test you can memorize tells you about your memory of the test. It stops telling you about you.
So what would an honest test look like?
It would never show you the same puzzle twice. Every time you sat down, the questions would be new — pulled fresh from a deep well — so there's nothing to memorize and nothing left over from last time. You'd face the same kind of challenge, but never the same challenge.
It would measure the thing underneath, not your memory of last time. There's a real difference between getting better at one specific crossword because you happen to remember the answers, and actually getting better at crosswords. One is a trick of memory. The other is a real change in you. An honest test only counts the second kind.
And it would lean on the parts of the mind where knowing the trick barely helps — how fast you genuinely react, whether you can hold your attention while everything tries to pull it away. You can't fake raw speed by having seen it before.
Think of the difference between a treadmill that flashes the same distance no matter how hard you run, and one that actually measures the ground you covered. Only one of them is worth looking at. Only one can tell you whether you're getting fitter.

A single test, taken once, is just a snapshot — a single dot. The whole reason to measure yourself is to draw a line: to see, a month from now, whether the sleep you finally fixed, the training you started, the stress you dealt with, actually moved anything. Why do you score higher the second time you take a brain test?
